The best way to fix and prevent lawn pests is to properly identify them so you can use the correct methods for treatment. That's what we do here at Brookfield Lawn Care

When it comes to insects as the pest, there's really only two common ones here in our Wisconsin climate. First is grubs. Grubs are the most damaging lawn and turf insect pest in the entire United States (according to the US Department of Agriculture). Second is the hairy chinch bugs. Chinch bugs are less common in southeast Wisconsin compared to grubs, but they still appear occasionally in our turf.

Benefits Of Proper Pest Control

Obviously pests cause major problems for yards. So the clear benefits are a healthy lawn that provides a great space and environment for leisure and playtime. Hiring a pest control company is one of the most effective ways to guarantee a strong yard each and every season. We all know how tough winter is here in Wisconsin and we always feel like our outdoor season is limited. Don't waste the precious warm seasons with a weed-free lawn you're not proud of because it's infested with pests.

Controlling Pests In Yards

Grubs, also known as Japanese Beetles, are attracted to moist soils which is why they are more common among lawns that are well maintained. If you have a strong lawn, be on the lookout for grubs.

The best time to treat for grubs is the early summer (around late April or May) as this is when the larvae from grubs first hatch and they are most susceptible to our treatments.

As for hairy chinch bugs, they prefer Kentucky Bluegrass which happens to be the most common grass type in southern Wisconsin. Common signs of chinch bugs are random stray patches of dried or dying grass in your yard. No matter how much you water, the patch continues to grow larger (and then you know you have a pest problem).

Two main options can be used to handle chinch bugs. If the infestation is large and in mid-summer, specialized treatment options can target the pests and kill most of them. The problem is this treatment can also kill the grass so you'll have to re-seed and fertilize.

The second option is prevention which occurs in April and May. If sampling proves chinch bugs are present, proper insecticides can be used to control them before they grow full sized. This is preferred as little harm is done to the yard.
